5 Newborn Gift Mistakes New Parents Actually Hate (and What to Buy Instead)

Every new parent has a drawer full of gifts they'll never use. We're not judging — gifting for a newborn is genuinely hard if you don't know what new parents actually need. After years of making personalised knitted gifts for thousands of families across Australia, we've heard every story. Here are the five most common gifting mistakes, and what to do instead.

Mistake 1: Buying newborn size (0-000)

This is the most common one. Newborn size sounds logical for a newborn — but most babies outgrow it within weeks. Some babies are born too big to wear it at all. If you want your gift to actually be worn, go for size 000 (0-3 months) or 00 (3-6 months). The baby will grow into it, and the parents will love you for thinking ahead.

Go for size 00 or 0. Label the gift with the size so parents know to save it.

Mistake 2: Buying white

White looks beautiful in photos. In real life, it's a nightmare. Newborns are messy — spectacularly, impressively messy. A white knit sweater that shows every milk stain is a source of stress, not joy. Reach for warm naturals (oatmeal, camel, dusty rose) or deep tones (terracotta, sage green, navy) that hide the inevitable.

Our most-loved colours: oatmeal, dusty rose, warm camel, and sage green. All available with custom name embroidery.

Mistake 3: Generic, unbranded basics

New parents receive mountains of plain onesies and plain singlets. They're useful, sure — but they all blur together. A gift that has the baby's name on it? That's one they'll remember. Personalised gifts become keepsakes. They get photographed. They get kept long after the baby has outgrown them. A plain onesie doesn't.

Mistake 4: Buying for the baby, not for the parents

Here's a thought: the baby doesn't know what they're wearing. The parents do. A gift that makes the parents feel seen — something beautiful, something made with care — is worth ten times a practical item that gets lost in the laundry.

Mistake 5: Leaving it to the last minute

Personalised gifts take time to make. We embroider every name by hand, which means we need a bit of notice — especially around Christmas, Mother's Day, and those busy newborn gift periods. Order early and your gift will arrive before the baby does. Order last minute and... well, we do our best, but personalisation takes the time it takes.

Our standard turnaround is 3-5 business days. Express options available — check the product page for current lead times.

The best baby gift is one that's personal, practical, and beautiful. A hand-knitted sweater with the baby's name embroidered in the softest yarn checks all three. And it comes in colours that actually survive the laundry.
