Most patterned baby blankets are printed. Ours isn't. The sheep on this one are knitted into the fabric itself — worked in as the blanket is made, so there's nothing sitting on the surface to crack, peel, or wash away. The pattern will still be there when it's handed down.

It's 100% cotton, in a fine knit that behaves the way parents actually need a blanket to behave: light enough to layer over a bassinet in July, warm enough for the pram in October, and soft enough that it doesn't need a "special occasion" to come out of the drawer. Cotton also breathes, which matters more in the first year than almost anything else.

The colours are quiet on purpose — greys, sage, ivory, a soft blue. They sit against a nursery rather than shouting at it, and they photograph well, which is not a small thing when the baby is three weeks old and the camera never stops.

Baby — 31" × 39" (80 × 100 cm)
The everyday size. Fits a bassinet, folds into a nappy bag, drapes over a pram without trailing on the ground.

Toddler — 47" × 59" (120 × 150 cm)
The one they keep. Big enough for a cot or a single bed, and for the sofa years after that.
